Artificial life (commonly Alife or alife) is a field of study which examine systems related to life, its processes, and its evolution through simulation and recreation. More precisely, "ALife" is the name given to a discipline that studies life-forms by attempting to recreate biological phenomena from scratch within computers and other "artificial" media.
