A link from one node to another is the basic element in a social network. It is a connection between nodes, elements, agents or individuals, and can represent a specific type of relationship, such as friendship, kinship or following. In its simplest form, a social network is simply a set of specific links, which correspond to friends or followers, between a set of social objects, such as persons. This set can be described as a graph or network.

A link can also conncet an individual and a group. The end of the link at the group can be described as a "circle of friends" in this group. A strong link has a high coupling constant or a large number of friends, a weak link has a low coupling constant or a small number of friends.
