Agent-Based Computing is the name for the attempt to use Multi-Agent Systems for computational purposes. Ideally agents work together to achieve a common collective goal. Another name is for the same approach is AOSE. A collection of agents is more like a society than a machine, with all the problems common societies have, and it is not easy to build such systems. A society usually contains several organizations, which have to be specified. What is the right balance between planned or imposed organization and self-organization, between heteronomy (governed by an external rule) and autonomy (governed by internal rules) ? If you can use the concept of self-organization alone to build these systems is unclear. The engineering of self-organizing applications (ESOA) is a field of its own.
